Recycled Christmas Cards - send eco-friendly Christmas cheer

Recycled_christmas_cards  In the UK at Christmas we send 1 billion Christmas cards, and use 80 km2 of wrapping paper, much of which ends up on landfills, so this year we rather like recycled Christmas cards like these designer ones by Lisa Jones.

Multi-packs are currently available here.

Organic Vineyard Tour & Taste

Give someone a tour of an organic vineyard in one of the most idyllic locations in Southern England. Eight miles from Hastings, East Sussex. Here you will find organic vineyards, bluebell walks through ancient woodlands and picnic areas surrounded by ancient oaks overlooking lush pastures. Organic_vineyard_tour

The tour itself consists of a conducted walk around the vineyard with information presented by an expert guide - normally the owner or manager of the vineyard. Details of English wine in general and of the estate wines in particular are presented in a lively, informative style.  A full tour also involves the Woodland Walk and a visit to the Winery, where participants can learn first-hand about the art of wine making in the traditional, organic way as well as see the plant and equipment required for apple juice and cider production. To conclude the tour, the group will be given a tutored tasting of Sedlescombe organic wines.
The complete tour and tasting takes approx. one hour and there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions as well as purchase wines in 3-packs, 6-packs, and cases, all at discount prices. The vouchers are valid for 12 months and are currently available for £55.00 here.

The big online brands getting all ethical - Firebox does 'eco-bags'

Shopper_eco_bag  We have posted a couple of times in the past on recycled juice bags. As well as their impressive eco-friendly credentials (re-using cartons that would otherwise end up in landfill), these bags are  also helping impoverished communities, as they are made by a women's cooperative in the Philippines. Maybe most importantly, the bags look very, very good and they are not at all expensive.

The Shopper bag and Woven handbag (both pictured) are currently available at Firebox for £9.95 and £14.95 respectively hereWoven_handbag

USB Rechargable Batteries - what will they think of next?

Pairofusbrechargeable_batteries  USBCELL is a revolutionary new rechargeable AA battery. By opening the cap and plugging into a USB connector, you can recharge them pretty much anywhere there's a USB socket. USBCELL can be used in any device needing an AA battery.

By making it easier to recharge batteries, it means fewer disposable batteries get made and thrown away (300 million batteries are thrown away into landfills in the UK every year), and so is better for the environment.

The ingenious device is priced at around £11.49 and is currently available here.

Ecospheres - a rather weird and wonderful eco-gift

Gorgonia_beachworldbiosphere_2  An EcoSphere is a working ecological system and its biological cycle represents a simple version of Earth’s own ecosystem. Containing Shrimp this is an ecosystem of animal and plant life in perfect balance with nature.
Each system comprises a clear ‘soup’ of filtered seawater containing gravel and gorgonia (the non-living branch like material) together with some shrimp, algae and bacteria. Each is a key component of the ecosystem. The gravel, gorgonia and glass all provide surface areas to which the micro-organisms can attach themselves.

If you think the Ecosphere is cruel then fear not. The average life of the small EcoSpheres is two to three years, which is longer than if they were in the real ecosystem as they have no predators to worry about. EcoSpheres need warmth as well as light to function correctly. Keeping the temperature fairly constant assists the long-term viability of the system. Ecospheres are available from around £69 here.
